Letting Go

In Northeastern Ohio, autumn reminds me about the power of transitions. It’s a beautiful season of letting go.  As the trees shed their vibrant leaves, they are self-protecting for the cold months ahead. Unlike evergreen plants, these trees cannot produce photosynthesis (or food) when weighed down with water, wind, and snow. Letting go of their leaves puts them in dormancy for winter and gives them a new start in the spring.

Transitions and Emotions

Nature’s seasonal cycles are reflective times. Autumn reminds me of what emotions I carry that are no longer serving me. Feelings like fear, remorse, and apprehension come to mind. While starting a new business, these emotions once helped me use caution as I made important decisions about my path ahead. Now, I notice that they are holding me back from what’s possible. It’s time to let go.

A New Start

According to Dr. Robert Plutchik’s study of emotions, “Once we objectify and understand our emotions, we can empathize with ourselves and channel our focus in the direction of the emotions we want to feel.”

What emotions might you consciously let go of to give yourself hope and promise in the months to come?  Here are some reflection questions:

  • What emotions do you notice are weighing you down?

  • What actions (or inactions) do these emotions lead to?

  • How can you accept these emotions for what they are?

  • What emotions do you want to channel your focus on instead?

This autumn, take the time to reflect on what emotions are holding you back so that you can move forward with clarity and confidence.
